In less than 50 years Japan has emerged from the ashed of its defeat in World War Two to become an economic superpower which can swallow western corporations within the stronghold of their own design – the capitalist economy. Japan has become the world’s major creditor, the largest distributor of aid to developing countries, and chief banker to the United States. Nobody can escape Japanese influence. America today is divided, toworrow is Europe’s turn? Is Japan our saviour or grave-digger, our partner or adversary ? Is the world’s economic centre of gravity irrevocably shifting ?
