Synopsis

September, 12th 1962. Taking advantage of the emotion caused by the assassination attempt of little Climart, General De Gaule suggested the election of President of the Republic by universal suffrage. This idea deeply shocked the parliamentary government. Not only it contravenes after almost a century of republican practice, but the previous one of Louis Napoleon Bonaparte makes worrying the very notion of a head of state invested by people. De Gaule faced to both parties, this is not a new fight, but contrarily of the situation of 1946 it is not illegal. A five weeks- confrontation, marked by the anger of Gaston Monnerville, gives to the General victory during referendum of october, 28th. Republic definitely passed in the age of “presidential monarchy”.
