Posterity has inherited an image of Operation Overlord as a heroic achievement. Thanks to an instinctive understanding uniting the British and the Americans and the irreproachable combativeness of their troops – firm in the belief that they were fighting for freedom and democracy, the Allied Landing is remembered as an overwhelming victory. And yet! Between disagreements amongst the leaders, hasty planning, logistical problems, the vagaries of the weather, and the soldiers’ lack of preparedness, Operation Overlord was very nearly a fiasco.
