Africa's Fight for it's Art
A unique art-history saga on an urgent political and cultural issue, « Restitution? » tells the troubling story of the hundreds of thousands of African artefacts that fill Western museums, and whose return is now being demanded by their countries of origin. Snatched up like trophies by colonial powers, the works fertilized European artists before being celebrated as universal masterpieces. But in Africa, their absence is still traumatic, and comunities as museums ask for justice and repatriations. Will European museums and States eventually address their blind spots? Through a dazzling mix of archives, historical features that dialogue with stellar speakers from seven countries, the film explores what decolonizing cultural heritages means, and how art restitutions may redesign relationships between Europe and Africa.
